We have a centrally located modern family home in Pohara in beautiful Golden Bay at the top of the South Island of New Zealand

Our accommodation is available throughout the year, especially if you're a touring birder or photographer looking for somewhere handy, comfortable, clean and safe. Casual guests are welcome too of course, anyone who wants to explore the attractions of our beautiful Golden Bay.

We can provide a range of accommodation options; from bed only where you cater for your own breakfast needs; bed and breakfast fare for the casual guest just visiting the area for a few days, through to full guided trips to the local birding and photographic hot spots for those travelers with more specific ambitions.

New Zealand's 'best kept secret'

Golden Bay is nestled into the South Island's north-west corner. A chain of steep and rugged mountains cuts its fertile river plains and valleys from the rest of the island. The Bay's wonderful outdoor environment attracts regular summer holiday makers year after year, but an increasing number of visitors are discovering that the area can be enjoyed all year round.
Most of the time here it is sunny, warm, calm and quiet (except for the birds twittering!).

Ken and Janet are your hosts

Ken is a keen birder; plus he has been a professional photographer for the last 35 years (see www.kengeorge.co.nz). Ken is a member of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand and is a regular contributor to eBird.com. His wife, Janet is keen on bush walking, with an interest in the botany of the local region.
To see some of the more habitat-specific birds - for example, the alpine birds such as Rock Wren, Kea and Kaka - may require a third party recommendation and we are happy to provide this.
